(Photo by Jordan Holland) 1 / 2 Trending Marietta College gave the home crowd plenty to cheer for Saturday in the final game at Don Drumm Stadium this season. The Pioneers caught fire in the second quarter and rolled to a 38-10 win over Wilmington to finish Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 5-3 record. Marietta, which improved to 6-3 overall and clinched a winning season in head coach Tom Hinkle's first season, will visit Mount St. Joseph next week in a regular-season finale. “It was great to send the seniors out on a high note," Hinkle said. "They have sacrificed so much and have definitely left their mark on Marietta College football. It was another dominant performance by our defense. After the first quarter they took over and never allowed Wilmington back into the game. They did a great job of creating havoc.” Wilmington (2-7 overall, 1-6 OAC) connected on a deep pass from Miles Hostetler to Keion Brown on the first play from scrimmage, but Marietta corner Ray Kelley recovered and punched the ball out of Brown's hands. Taison Starr fell on the loose ball as the Pioneers set up shop on their own 42-yard line. A 20-yard run by Zion Jackson-Wilborn and a 15-yard pass from Joe Tenta to Payton Newman set up Isaiah Mitchell's 6-yard touchdown run to get the Pios on the board, 6-0. Wilmington's ensuing possession stalled on its own 38, and a bad snap rolled all the way to the goalline, forcing the Quaker punter to boot the ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety. Wilmington's offense settled in on its next drive, which resulted in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Hostetler to Joseph Spann to cut it to 8-7, which was the score at the end of one. From there, the Pioneers kicked it into gear and scored 17 unanswered points going into halftime. Ethan Snyder's 38-yard catch and run set up Antwon Johnson's 3-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Miller on fourth-and-goal. After the MC defense forced a three-and-out, the Pioneers scored on one play when Tenta connected with Chrys Taylor on a 60-yard touchdown strike. Marietta added a 33-yard field goal by James Cornwell to make it 25-7 at halftime. Cornwell tacked on two more field goals in the third quarter to make it 31-7 going into the fourth. Wilmington got one back on Camden Marx's 25-yard field goal early in the fourth, but Marietta put the finishing touches on the victory with 1:56 to go when senior Sulayman Jalloh found the end zone from a yard out. Benny Lewis led Marietta's running game with 103 yards on 12 attempts. Jackson-Wilborn added 15 carries for 79 yards. Tenta was 15 for 35 for 226 yards through the air. He was intercepted three times -- twice by Javon Pray and once by Miller Fall. Taylor finished with three catches for 95 yards. Defensively, Marietta's pass rush was relentless, registering nine sacks on the day. Ethan Crock and Harper Scott had 2 1-2 sacks each while Starr brought the QB down twice. Taylor and Drew Neal each had an interception for the Pios.
